Catchmaster Pestimonial – ABES Pest Control

In this Catchmaster Pestimonial learn how company-branded insect monitors from Catchmaster are one of ABES Pest Control’s most effective marketing tools.

24/7 Business Cards

While Jeff King, president of ABES Pest Control, is an entomologist at heart, he’s also an accomplished businessman. That’s why this successful PMP with more than a quarter-century of industry experience appreciates it when an industry product supplier like Catchmaster not only offers a wide array of quality products, but also provides sales and marketing support.

King grew up on a small family farm in rural Indiana, pulling weeds and bailing hay for 50 cents an hour, before graduating high school and heading off to Ball State University to study business. Eager to expand his horizons, King left college after two years and joined the U.S. Air Force, studying meteorology before transferring to an entomology program, where he embarked on what would become his life’s work.

“I was stationed at Beale Air Force Base in the Sacramento Valley for four years where I learned about Pacific Coast termites, snakes and a number of other pests,” he said. “It was a great training ground for me.”

The Start of a Career in Pest Control

Following his military career, King returned to the “Hoosier State” in 1985 to join Pest Doctor Systems, rising through the ranks of the company to become part owner. Then, in 1999, he and wife Gena decided to venture out on their own, moving to Northern Kentucky to launch ABES Pest Control (Absolute Best Exterminating Service).

“We started from scratch and worked out of our house for several years,” Jeff says of those early days. “Now we have an office, several techs and a CSR, but we’re still maintaining that small, family business image that is dedicated to personal service and customer retention.”

Not surprisingly, a major reason for the company’s success is Jeff and Gena’s business acumen, which has allowed them to support a number of families and put two children through college. In fact, before deciding to relocate to Florence, Ky., home of ABES Pest Control, they did a demographic study of Boone County, which had grown in population by 50 percent between 1990 and 1999. “We knew it was growing rapidly and residents were going to need pest control,” Jeff says, “so it was the perfect place to start a pest control business at that time.”

Growth Supported by Suppliers

Another reason the company has grown so quickly is the support of product suppliers like Catchmaster. King describes the company’s insect monitors as “great advertising tools” that have “generated lots of compliments since I started using them two years ago.” Jeff says he uses the monitors liberally to assess insect pressure in both residential and commercial accounts. “You try to keep them discreet, but customers see the name of our company printed on the devices and it reminds them of our company on a daily basis,” he says.

Jeff also has found a creative, high-profile way to use the custom monitors, which he purchases by the pallet from longtime sales rep Dave Johnson, to promote his business. “I take them to networking meetings and I hand them out to my business colleagues,” he says. “There’s a small upcharge for purchasing the branded insect monitors in volume, but it’s well worth the investment. It’s like a glueboard business card!”

While the year of COVID-19 has been challenging for everyone involved in the pest control industry, King says his business has weathered the storm thanks to a solid termite season, a steady increase in residential service calls, and a rebounding commercial market, the latter of which has been driven by the enhanced visibility of company-branded insect monitors. “We’ve been blessed,” he says.

Mosquito Battles – Final Feed Mosquito Bait

By | Mosquitoes, Pest Business, Pestimonials, Tips & Inspirations, Trapping Tips | No Comments

Saving the Schools

In this version of Pest Management Professional’s Mosquito Battles series, Anaheim Union High School District’s Rich Kravetz controls the growing mosquito population in Southern California with Final Feed Mosquito Bait.

Anaheim, California was hit by more than just a heat wave in the spring of 2019. A new species of mosquito was flying about the city, darkening the normally sunny skies.  This mosquito – known as the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) was targeting high population areas with tall trees and thick bushes, such as the Anaheim Union High School District.

Mosquito Battles - Kravetz

Rich Kravetz, an integrated pest management (IPM) technician for the school district, knows the importance of protecting schools from Asian tiger mosquitoes, a known carrier of West Nile virus and other illnesses. Kravetz is no newbie to the pest management profession – hit father has owned a pest control business for the last 50 years. Because of his background, Kravetz understands how much of an impact one product can have on the mosquito population.

Kravetz began using Catchmasters’ Final Feed Mosquito Bait in 2019, and has seen a huge impact across all 22 locations of the Anaheim Union High School District.

“We had a cloud of mosquitoes over Orange County and Southern California, so we were just looking for something to help alleviate or lessen the frustration with them,” says Kravetz, “We started using it in May, and we are already seeing huge results.”

Mosquito Battles - Final Feed

Kravetz has tried multiple different tactics to try to lessen the severity of the Asian tiger mosquito population around the schools, but has found that not much works to effectively rid the area of the pest – except for Final Feed.

“The product goes right on the shady bushes where the mosquitoes hang out, so the sweet draws them in and the garlic kills them,” he explains.

The non-toxic formula used in Final Feed makes it ideal to use around children, utilizing natural fruit juices to bait the mosquitoes and garlic to starve them. When paired with Catchmaster’s Ovi-Catch Mosquito Trap, Kravetz says, the combination makes for the ideal mosquito solution for schoolyards.

Mosquito Battles - Ovi-Catch

Showing results with the product is also easy, according to Kravetz. Every female mosquito killed by Final Feed or caught by Ovi-Catch mosquito trap eliminates up to 1,000 future mosquitoes. The best part of using Final Feed around the schools for Kravetz is being able to communicate with the students, staff and parents that the IPM technicians are doing something that will have results. Kravetz recalls it having the most impact on a special needs school in the district.

Kravetz sprayed the property with Final Feed, and saw positive results almost immediately. Final Feed helps to control the mosquitoes, resulting in smaller populations. This allowed the children to spend more time outside with less of a risk to get bites from the daytime-feeding species.

Mosquito Battles - Garlic

“Anything I can do for them means a lot,” Kravetz says, “They’re so appreciative. When you get a smile from the kids playing outside – that’s real.”

A little goes a long way with Final Feed, so Kravetz is able to spray more sparingly and still impact the mosquito population at the school.

“I can’t recommend this enough,” Kravetz says of Ovi-Catch, “The buckets are out of sight from the kids and families.” Meanwhile, of Final Feed he says, “The smell is nice. It’s really a great product to have.”

Catchmaster Pestimonial – Sentry Pest Solutions

Catchmaster Pestimonial – Sentry Pest Solutions

In this edition of our Catchmaster Pestimonial series, an Illinois PMP provides environmentally sensitive mosquito control service to a   client base devoted to “green” principles.

A More Natural Approach to Pest Control

Daniel Genty, owner of Sentry Pest Solutions, a one-man pest control operation serving the upscale communities of Homer Glen and New Lenox, Ill., a pastoral region 40 miles west of Chicago, had a specific vision for his business when he opened the doors in 2019.

“I wanted to bring a safer, more natural approach to pest control,” he said. “A lot of customers out here are affluent and they’re concerned about the environment. They don’t mind spending a few extra dollars for an IPM program or all-natural products that will protect the environment.”

The Village of Homer Glen is so committed to preserving its unique rural character and pursuing a “green vision” that its official website features the tagline, “Community and Nature … in Harmony.” The 23-square-mile village, which 25,000 people proudly call home, features ample green space, along with numerous wetlands and floodplains, attractive habitats for mosquito breeding, which can be a major problem for residents throughout the spring and summer.

Solutions for Accounts that Require Special Attention

Catchmaster Pestimonial - Dan Genty

“Last year I had a number of problem properties requiring special attention since they backed up to wetlands or forested areas with heavy mosquito pressure,” Genty observed. “These were absolute nightmare jobs,” he added, with residents and pets being eaten alive by mosquitoes when they ventured outside in the early evening.

Despite the detrimental impact on the quality of life of community members, residents still demanded an environmentally sensitive approach to their mosquito problems. “These were dream customers you don’t want to lose, so I was honest with them,” Genty said. “I told them I have this new product (Final FeedTM from Catchmaster®) and I don’t know how well it will work, but if you’re willing to give it a try I’ll do the best I can to solve your problem.”

Genty, 39, learned about Final Feed Mosquito Bait from his Catchmaster sales representative, but he had never tried the product until last summer. Final Feed features a proprietary, dual-action formula that includes natural fruit juices that attract hungry mosquitoes, combined with a lethal dose of microencapsulated garlic (0.4%).

Genty was intrigued by the product because it is classified as a 25b minimum-risk pesticide by the EPA, an important attribute for his environmentally conscious customer base. Backed by peer-reviewed published science, Final Feed is applied to non-flowering plants and mosquito resting sites as a residual spray, using their feeding behavior against them.

Captain Stan (aka the Mosquito Man) & Final Feed

“Both male and female mosquitoes require multiple sugar meals each day for energy and survival,” observes Dr. Stan Cope, vice president of technical products and services for AP&G, manufacturer of the Catchmaster line of products. “They acquire these sugar meals from plants.”

The unique, non-toxic formulation suppresses blood feeding and collapses mosquito populations by more than 90% in two to three weeks. “The exact mode of action is unknown, but after ingestion, the majority of the mosquitoes die within one or two days,” Cope said. “Further, after ingesting the garlic, female mosquitoes lose their appetite for blood,” resulting in a dramatic decline in biting activity, critical to the success of any mosquito management program.

Catchmaster Pestimonial - Final Feed

Mosquito Problems

In Genty’s first “problem account,” a single-family home in close proximity to a landscape business with two large ponds, mosquito pressure was high, making it difficult for the homeowners to venture outside after dusk. Genty treated the property with Final Feed, spraying non-flowering plants with the bait. Upon calling the homeowner three days later, “She said her family was in the backyard the day after the treatment and they didn’t get bitten once,” according to Genty, and the treatment lasted 60 days.

A second property, which bordered a nearby tree line, proved equally as problematic. “There were some woods and a pretty decent-sized creek that went through the property,” Genty recalls, “but Final Feed performed the same. The customer was thrilled with the results.”

Genty acknowledges the product has a slight garlic odor, “but it’s not a bad smell and I haven’t received any complaints from customers.” It comes packaged in four pouches per case and has a shelf life of two years. No special storage requirements are necessary.

“I’ve been very pleased with the product and am looking forward to using it again this coming mosquito season,” Genty said.

Captain Stan Cope (aka the Mosquito Man) is our Vice President of Technical Services.  He is proud to be a part of this Catchmaster Pestimonial.  Learn more about him here: https://catchmasterpro.com/blog/stan-cope-phd/

From Technician to Owner

Daniel Genty, owner of Sentry Pest Solutions, didn’t intend to pursue a career in the pest control industry. He started working in the industrial engineering field, before an unexpected layoff prompted him to consider other career options.

“A gentleman who provided pest control services to my mom’s work said his company was hiring technicians,” Genty recalls. “I applied for a job, was hired, and absolutely fell in love with the industry. What I liked about the industry is my customers were happy to see the bug guy because I was actually solving peoples’ problems.”

After being called back to his engineering job, Genty began to miss his daily interactions with customers in the field, finding himself increasingly bored sitting at a desk in front of a computer all day. “I realized I missed it,” he said, so Genty did the necessary research and secured the required certifications to launch Sentry Pest Solutions in 2019.

“I’ve been working on my own a year now and absolutely love it!”

Catchmaster Pestimonial – J&J Pest Control

Catchmaster Pestimonial – J&J Pest Control

Catchmaster Pestimonial - J & J

J&J Pest Control Takes a Bite Out of the Mosquito Market with Unique Sales Approach

In this edition of our Catchmaster Pestimonial series we talked with a partner in Texas.

Monica Malone, General Manager, for J&J Pest Control in Texas knows a good product when she sees it. So when her Catchmaster® rep introduced her to the Ovi-Catch™ Mosquito Trap she decided to test it around her own home. Malone believes testing a product on your own helps you to sell it. Having that personal experience with a product allows you to share your personal story with it and your enthusiasm shows through.

“It only took me two days to realize we were no longer being bitten by mosquitoes after installing the traps. It also helped us to uncover that our bass boat was what was attracting the mosquitoes to our yard. Everyone should try this in their own yard,” said Malone.

The testing phase

During the testing phase the benefits of the product really stood out. First, it was reassuring to not have to worry about the dog getting into the bucket, since it contains no pesticides and won’t harm him. Second, positioning of the containers and mosquito catch rates made her realize that her bass boat had accumulated water inside and was, therefore, the source of the mosquito breeding near her home.

Immediately after testing, Malone knew she had a winner. J&J Pest Control’s customer base is always inquiring about mosquito-borne diseases and has a strong interest in green offerings. Instead of simply selling the containers and relying on her customers to properly service them themselves each month she decided to give them an option.

Catchmaster Pestimonial - Fun Facts

Catchmaster Pestimonial – A unique service model

J& J Pest Control treat the containers like a bait station install. They rent and service the containers on a monthly basis.  During the service the team removes the old organic matter and refill. They’ve had a lot of luck using leaf litter fill but noted this needed to be changed out fairly frequently to ensure it didn’t create an odor.

Malone has found uses for the Ovi-Catch™ Mosquito Trap outside of just residential homes. Commercial buildings are a great target as are retention ponds where chemical treatments are not possible. She believes so strongly in their new mosquito offering that they will now include it in their on-hold music during mosquito season and are expecting a great response.

Catchmaster Pestimonial – Horizon Pest Control

There are great things on the Horizon for this NJ firm who reaps the benefits of Catchmaster® Private Label Products

In this Catchmaster Pestimonial we discuss our line of private label products.  Private label products from Catchmaster feature your brand in its best light.

Bernie Holst III is a second-generation pest management professional and now CEO of Horizon Pest Control located in Midland, NJ. Young Bernie began working for the family business before he even had a driver’s license and will take Horizon Pest Control into its 50th Anniversary in business in 2020.

“We’ve been using Atlantic Paste & Glue products for as long as I can remember,” said Bernie Holst III. “Throughout the years we moved into using Catchmaster® traps in addition to the glue products. We just seem to use more and more Catchmaster® products over the years because they work well for us and they’re cost effective.”

This family owned business is always looking for unique ways to brand their company and market their services. Private label glue boards have become a staple product for them for about five years now.

Catchmaster Pestimonial - Horizon

Private label benefits

Bernie recalled a recent example of how private label products have worked for Horizon. Bernie received a sales call to a building in Manhattan that had concerns over some roach activity. He himself visited the account and did a one-time service for roaches after detecting just some low-level activity. He finished up the service by placing some private label insect monitors in the account and the client was relieved to be left with a way to track any further roach activity on her own.

Bernie felt confident he’d get a callback if there was indeed a need down the road, “Having our company name and number on the monitors has really benefited us. This client appreciated our one-time treatment but when she later experienced more roach activity she had our name and number handy. It’s really a great marketing tool for us to leave behind in an account.”

Private label products are helping this well-respected NJ firm stay on top of their customers minds. And, it can work for your business too. Catchmaster Pestimonial – Envirosafe

Catchmaster Pestimonial – Envirosafe

In this edition of our Catchmaster Pestimonial series, Veteran PMP Gary Pietrucha says the Catchmaster® brand listens to its customers, creating a corporate culture that values relationships and drives innovation.

The Value of Relationships

Relationships are important to Gary Pietrucha, owner and president of Envirosafe Pest Management, Itasca, Ill. Upon launching his company in 1988, the veteran PMP knew he wanted to operate a “boutique business” providing high-quality, environmentally sensitive pest control services, but one which also maintained close ties with its customers and employees as it grew.

“From the day I started, I wanted to be directly involved in the business,” he says. “I wanted to be large enough to handle major accounts, but small enough to know what was going on in every facet of the business. I didn’t want to lose track of my customers or employees. I wanted to be that ‘go-to’ person for both of them, and I think I’ve been successful.”

Catchmaster Pestimonial – The Value of Glue Boards

Those are also qualities Pietrucha values in his vendor relationships, which is why he thinks so highly of AP&G, manufacturer of the popular Catchmaster® line of products. Pietrucha says one of the reasons AP&G has been successful for so many years (the company was founded in 1952) is they listen to their customers.

A longtime proponent of glue boards, Pietrucha says he uses these valuable IPM tools in a variety of accounts, from warehouse and distribution centers to food-service facilities.

“Glue boards are an amazing pest control resource,” he says. “Us old-timers remember taking a gallon of bulk glue and making giant glue boards designed to capture large numbers of rodents. They were effective in reducing populations, but they looked unprofessional.”

Thanks to companies like AP&G, however, glue boards have become more sophisticated and increasingly effective over time. Today, the New Jersey-based company offers a comprehensive line of adhesive products, including rat glue boards, mouse glue boards, custom glue boards and glue trays.

“Glue boards are a very simple devices with multiple uses,” Pietrucha observes. “We use them in a variety of different applications and they also offer a number of public health benefits. Rodents not only get stuck on the boards, but the pathogens and parasites that reside on those rodents also get stuck.”

Catch Zone™ Pest Boundary Roll – A Timely Innovation

Catchmaster Pestimonial - Catch Zone

“I also use Catch ZoneTM in a number of accounts,” Pietrucha says. Perfect for clean outs and protecting large, sensitive areas, Catchmaster® Catch ZoneTM comes in 60-foot by 12-inch rolls that can be cut easily to conform to virtually any space, providing a first line of defense against both rodents and insects.

Pietrucha was so impressed with the product that he wondered if it could be adapted to control rats by applying a thicker layer of glue. “I asked Dave Johnson, my sales representative, and he listened,” Pietrucha says, shaking his head in amazement. “I’m small potatoes, just a little pest control guy from Itasca, but they listened to me! They took my comments to heart and helped me out. Now I can level the playing field against rats. I can put this long strip of glue out there and provide very effective rodent control.”

Catchmaster Pestimonial – Diox Pest Control

In this Catchmaster Pestimonial we examine how our Ovi-Catch™ Mosquito Trap helped Mike Robertson from Diox Pest Control with sensitive accounts.

mosquitoes at dusk

Ovi-Catch Helped Save This Pest Professional’s Two Largest Accounts

Mike Robertson is owner and CEO of Diox Pest Control. Prior to owning his own firm, Mike spent 17 years in the pest management industry working different aspects of the business from pest management technician to quality assurance manager in California, Washington and Hawaii. Mike recently shared with us his current struggle with controlling mosquitoes in two large resort accounts with sensitive water areas that contained wildlife, prohibiting his ability to use chemicals for control.

“Mosquitoes are a great add-on service offering for pest professionals. They are typically not a part of a general pest control contract and therefore an important and profitable addition for a pest management firm. Two of my current accounts are high-end resorts. Although they were happy with our general pest control, we struggled to get a true reduction in mosquitoes. These clients are located very close to areas where mosquitoes are reported as being infected with Zika & West Nile Virus so it’s beyond being a nuisance, mosquito control here is also about public health protection.”

catchmaster pestimonial

Catchmater Pestimonial: Ovi-Catch Mosquito Trap

“When I learned about Ovi-Catch I liked the concept and and decided to give them a try. After having Ovi-Catch out for two months, the clients are extremely happy with the control we’ve gained over mosquitoes. In just two months, they’ve hardly noticed mosquitoes in otherwise problem areas. I immediately decided to put out more throughout the rest of the property.”

Mike was thrilled with the results, “I’ve caught too many mosquitoes to count.” He went on to explain that his finding is the closer to the proximity of the standing water that you place the unit the higher the number of mosquitoes you’ll see on the glue board. Mike also began placing the units near areas where high mosquito populations were typically reported, usually within 20 feet of a breeding source to get the most control.

ovi-catch mosquito trap

We asked Mike how the units fit into the resort surroundings and he shared: “Besides being very effective, I really like that the buckets blend into the landscape. It’s a different approach to mosquito control. I can see a lot of opportunity with Ovi-Catch in the future and I’m planning to expand this to new properties as an alternative means of mosquito control. Ovi-Catch saved two of my largest accounts, totaling $50-$60k per year. I’m very happy I found this product.”

Catchmaster Pestimonial – Hoffman’s Exterminating

Catchmaster  Pestimonial – Hoffman’s Exterminating

In this Catchmaster Pestimonial we examine how private label products help Hoffman’s Exterminating elevate its brand and expand its market footprint.

Marketing Multiplier

The origin story of how Hoffman’s Exterminating became one of the most successful family-owned businesses in the state of New Jersey mirrors that of so many start-ups in the pest management industry. It began with an ambitious entrepreneur named William Hoffman launching a home-based business and knocking on doors to win customers. Sound familiar?

It’s a legacy that has been repeated thousands of times since the founding of the industry, with each company’s path to success unique in its own way. In Hoffman’s case, he understood from the beginning that elevating one’s brand is essential when competing against national players with deep pockets and sophisticated marketing expertise.

“From the beginning, I wanted to build a business that our employees would be proud to work for and eventually retire from, and we continue to do our best to build the company’s brand together every day,” Hoffman says. “Whether servicing commercial and residential accounts, participating in local festivals or sponsoring sporting events, we’re committed to supporting the communities we serve. We want everyone to know they can count on us to do the right thing.”

But beyond traditional advertising and community outreach, what can pest control companies do on a daily basis to elevate their brand and expand their market footprint? That’s where private label products offer a multiplier effect, providing “in-the-field” branding and 24/7 visibility for your company.

“We use a lot of the glue boards and traps from Catchmaster®, and everything has our branding on it, “Hoffman says. “We do a significant amount of commercial work and we want our name and brand everywhere to keep our company top-of-mind with our customers.”

A Trusted Partner

And AP&G, a company Hoffman’s Exterminating has been doing business with for nearly three decades, makes it easy to do just that by enabling PMPs to imprint their company logo, website, phone number or other pertinent information on Catchmaster glue boards and insect monitors.

“For companies like us, anything we can do to stand out from the crowd is beneficial,” Hoffman says. “That’s why we brand, brand, brand whenever and wherever we can.”

Catchmaster Pestimonial – Ideal Pest Control

Catchmaster Pestimonial – Ideal Pest Control

Dallas-based pest control company drives recurring revenue and expands eco-friendly service offerings with the Ovi-CatchTM AGO Mosquito Trap.

The “Aha” Moment

As a 35-year veteran of the pest control industry, Greg Miller, technical director of Ideal Pest Control, has seen it all. “I’ve been doing this a long time so nothing really surprises me anymore,” he says.

Yet every now and again, Miller does encounter something truly unique, whether it be an invasive species he’s never seen before or a game-changing product that allows him to enhance his Dallas-based company’s service offerings.

Miller experienced just such an “Aha!” moment recently while servicing a local zoo for mosquitoes, which were plaguing the park’s animals and patrons alike. Unlike other commercial accounts, however, Ideal Pest Control didn’t have a lot of control options at its disposal due to the sensitive nature of facility.

“The main concern in the account was the possible spread of West Nile Virus, which is carried by the Culex mosquito, and the client wanted something with less impact chemically because in zoos you can’t perform traditional pesticide treatments in many areas like you can in a lot of accounts,” he says.

Catchmaster Expertise

Fortunately, Miller has had a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Robert Stocker, national accounts manager for AP&G, manufacturer of the popular Catchmaster® line of pest control products. When Miller informed Stocker of the mosquito problems Ideal Pest Control was experiencing in the highly-complex commercial account, the veteran account manager thought he could help.

After all, AP&G recently began to expand its product offerings outside of its rodent control portfolio, recruiting Dr. Stan Cope, former president of the American Mosquito Control Association, to lead its R&D efforts and field-testing of mosquito products.

“Mosquitoes were becoming a serious problem throughout the zoo and we were concerned about the potential threat of West Nile Virus in the avian area, so we were looking for a product that would control Culex mosquitoes,” Miller says. “And ideally we were hoping for a non-chemical solution.”

Stocker suggested that Ideal consider installing a number of Catchmaster® Ovi-CatchTM AGO Mosquito Traps around the avian habitats at the zoo, as well as in other high-traffic areas of the park like the rhinoceros exhibit.

The trap features a specially formulated adhesive designed to catch female mosquitoes during the breeding cycle, dramatically reducing populations and lowering the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.

Easy-to-use and highly effective, the Ovi-Catch AGO Mosquito Trap is ideal for Integrated Pest Management programs in sensitive accounts like zoos, daycare centers, and health care facilities because it is non-toxic and environmentally safe. In fact, the pesticide-free solution has proven so successful in testing by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the agency uses Catchmaster® AGO Trap Replacement Glue Boards in numerous mosquito monitoring and population reduction programs throughout the United States.

How it Works

Technicians simply fill the 5-gallon container with 2.5 gallons of water and add a small amount of organic matter (i.e., hay) to the water. A glue board is then installed to the interior of the capture chamber, sticky side facing inward. The glue board features an innovative adhesive that has been specially formulated for mosquito applications. It is UV- and moisture-resistant, providing enhanced control under a variety of environmental conditions.

After the lid is snapped on, the trap is placed in the treatment zone. For best results, place the trap in cool, shaded areas with little or no wind.

“Once placed, female mosquitoes are attracted to the trap by its appearance and the odors emanating from the device from the decaying organic matter,” observes Dr. Cope. “When mosquitoes enter the trap through the capture chamber lid, they get stuck on the glue board and eventually die, preventing hatching of up to 150 eggs per female.”

Miller said Ideal Pest Control installed several traps in the avian area of the zoo to test the efficacy of the device before investing in a park-wide program. When the traps began immediately capturing large numbers of mosquitoes, Miller knew he was on the right track.

“What we discovered was the nastier the water, the better,” he said. “We’re learning as we go and our technicians are excited about the benefits offered by the traps and the additional business they’re generating.”

Bottom-line Benefits

And it’s not just a one-time sale, according to Miller. “Once the traps are installed, PMPs can charge a monthly service fee to change out the glue boards and provide an ongoing assessment of the property,” he says. “It fits nicely into our industry’s recurring revenue model, adding to the value of our business.”

Even better, once Miller determined the Ovi-Catch AGO Mosquito Trap was a viable control option for the zoo, Ideal Pest Control installed 48 of them throughout the park, resulting in an immediate reduction in mosquito populations. “Zoo management was very happy with the results of our control efforts,” he says. “We now have installed 150 of the traps throughout the zoo and they’ve been working great.”

In fact, Miller was so impressed by the performance of the traps that he decided to extend the product offering to Ideal’s residential customers throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area, which has been victimized by West Nile Virus outbreaks in the past.

Finding the Right Niche

“We’ve found a good niche for the Ovi-Catch traps in our residential accounts because homeowners are concerned about mosquito-borne illnesses and are becoming more and more sensitive to chemical use around their children and pets,” he says.

“It offers an effective ‘green’ option for mosquito control,” a message that resonates with families with young children, he says. “The traps have really added to our revenue base and they require little maintenance once placed. It’s an easy sell to homeowners.”

In fact, Miller says, every one of Ideal’s technicians now has an Ovi-Catch trap in their service vehicle to show customers in the event they express concerns about mosquitoes in and around their home.

“The techs are already at their customers’ homes, so it’s easy to pull one of the traps out of their vehicle and show the customer how it works,” Miller says. “We only started placing them around customers’ homes in July of last year and we’ve already placed hundreds of them throughout our service area. It’s been a nice revenue-generator for us and our technicians love selling the service.”
